Artistic Director Search
The Houston Pride Band is seeking qualified candidates to join their artistic leadership team in the position of Associate Artistic Director.
The Houston Pride Band serves as the community band in Houston's gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and ally community and is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization supporting the Houston community. The mission of the Houston Pride Band is to provide a welcoming, comfortable and safe musical outlet for LGBT and ally musicians to participate in a community band setting. The Houston Pride Band is a member of both the Pride Bands Alliance and the Association of Community Bands.
Associate Artistic Director
The Associate Artistic Director of the Houston Pride Band collaborates with the Artistic director to plan and execute the artistic direction of the Band. This includes artistic season planning, repertoire selection, rehearsal planning, rehearsing the band, and conducting concert band performances. The Associate Artistic Director works in collaboration with other members of the band leadership team, including the Artistic Director, Music Librarian, Equipment Manager, Marching/Pep Band Director, Chamber Music Coordinator, and the nine-member Board of Directors, to provide a fun, worthwhile experience for the member musicians and guest artists. As part of programming responsibilities, the artistic directors may select soloists, guest artists and guest conductors, assist with recruiting permanent and supplemental member musicians, and determine the best utilization of rehearsals & sectionals. The Houston Pride Band is a non-profit organization and while this position is a volunteer role, the band is able to provide the Associate Artistic Director with a small stipend for their efforts, as well as reimbursement for approved expenses incurred during the discharge of their duties.
Qualifications
- Collegiate-level education in music, with a specialization in music education or conducting preferred.
- Proven experience in rehearsal and performance techniques of concert bands.
- Effective, adaptive, and responsive communication skills, both in writing and public speaking.
- The capacity to effectively represent the band publicly when called upon to do so.
- Ability to work successfully & diplomatically with a community band membership that includes musicians of varying ages, backgrounds, ability, and temperament.
Commitment
The Houston Pride Band Board of Directors handle the day-to-day operations of the band, including arranging rehearsal space, performance venues and volunteer opportunities, and most other band operations. The artistic leadership team is primarily concerned with the concert season programming and preparation. The role of conductor does have a substantial time commitment, and the Board of Directors will work closely with the Artistic Director to define roles and expectations accordingly so that everyone involved can maintain a productive work-life balance.

Applicants should send a letter of interest, along with a résumé/c.v. to info@houstonprideband.org. If available, please include links to any music or video samples of previous conducting or rehearsal work. Selected finalists will participate in an interview and be asked to lead a sight-reading rehearsal (typically 30 minutes) on a piece or pieces of their choosing. The Board of Directors may invite the finalist to return to conduct additional rehearsals. Further details will be discussed with finalists prior to appointment.
